Mosel and Rhine River Castle Tour

So, here are a few (ha, ha) pictures from our most recent weekend venture. (Forgive the disorganization--blogger is not cooperating with me today.)
It was a beautiful morning (which happens very rarely during winter in Germany) and we decided to get in the car and drive the rivers to see some castles. We only spent time at 2 castles.
In St. Goar on the Rhine River stands Rheinfels Castle. It was so cool! Here we are going down the back (?) side of the castle to explore some tunnels. There are some super mysterious mine tunnels for which we were given a candle and some matches. However, we had been out in the sub freezing weather for maybe an hour or so, and then Ezra tripped and "broke his legs". It was kind of downhill from there, and we had to call it a day. So we never got to see the mines. I think we'll go back when it warms up. It's not too far from our house.

After we left the castle we noticed that people and Polizei were looking at something in the river. Apparently this barge had capsized/sunk in the river. You never forget for long that the rivers are used for transporting goods. It seemed there were barges floating by constantly.
This was the cellar of Rheinfels castle.

One of the many tunnels and archways.

Ezra loved climbing. Everywhere. What good is a pile of rocks if you can't climb on them?

Family pic at Rheinfels Castle.
We thought Ezra was right behind us. Instead he had climbed into this window which I'm pretty sure looked onto a sheer drop into a dark abyss. Yikes!
Try to find us. :)

Try to find Ezra. :)

This was really the first thing we did. The entry to the castle is at the bottom of the picture through the big wooden gate. Then we climbed up those super steep, supper narrow stairs. That's Mike and the boys at the bottom of the wooden part. We didn't go all the way to the top of the tower though.

Outside the gate before it opened.
The boys on the bridge over the moat.

Another castle on the Mosel.

Our first stop. Some random town on the Mosel River.

Up the hill to the castle. We had to park in town and hike up.

Don't know who these guys were. There were a bunch of costumed folks all around. But it seemed that they were all leaving. The castle was already closed for the day when we got there. We didn't get to go in. The price you for spontenaity I suppose.

Just some catching up

Mike had some R&R after the deployment. We just stayed home and took it easy, but we did make it to the pool for some family time.
This is such a silly picture. It cracks me up. Jonas is purposefully being silly, but Ezra just happens to have a crazy look on his face.

I tried unsuccessfully to get a good picture of Judith on this day. She looked so cute in her shirt and jeans.

Another cheese ball picture of THE Cheeseball.

Ezra is such a sweet brother and was reading to Judith in this picture.

This was a blissful occassion when they were all playing well and I was able to do other things. Well, until I snapped this picture at least... I just had to ruin the moment.

This past week I switched out all of Judith's 6 month clothes for 9 months clothes, so I'm loving all her new outfits! We also finally got some Robeez for her. Shoes that stay on--Hallelujah! Judith will be 9 months tomorrow! :(

See those pearly whites? Just two bottom teeth for now. Jonas had a mouthful of teeth by this age.

Such a sweet, drooly smile.

We had like 2 or 3 sunny days in a row, and I think the temps were in the 50s, so we spent some time outside!

Love this outfit! Have I mentioned that girls are sooooo much more fun to dress than boys? Judith is thrilled to be able to stand by herself. She gets the biggest smile on her face as she tried to maintain her balance. Mostly she's just letting go of things to stand unassisted, or when I put her down on the floor, she'll stand before she sits.

The next blog will probably be Ezra's 4th birthday party pictures!

Home for the Holidays

Mike rejoined our eagerly awaiting family on Dec 21st, just in time for Judith's 8 month birthday and Christmas. We were ALL very happy to be together again!

Judith welcomes Daddy home. She looks a little wary in this picture. She was watching a dog that was VERY excited to be reunited with its owner. Truth be told, there was really no adjustment period for Judith. She warmed to her Daddy right away.
Daddy and two very happy boys.
Jonas, Daddy, and Ezra with the cake that Jonas and Ezra decorated. "Are you kidding? Daddy comes home AND we get cake?? Best night EVER!"
Due to a large amount of snow that had been falling all day on Christmas Eve, we were not able to go to our church's Candlelight service. But I made everyone dress up for pictures and we had our own "service" at home with a reading of the birth of Christ, some carols, and some candles.

Christmas morning.

I couldn't decide which of these pics of Judith was the cutest, so I put both. Her reindeer horns are too far forward on her head, but I thought it was so sweet.

Mommy and Judith in front of the tree.

Another "Judith, the reindeer" photo. Couldn't get enough of those...

Merry Christmas!

Christmas in Houston

As our time in Texas came to a close, it seemed things got even busier.
We decided to head out to Santa's Wonderland in College Station.
It was about an hour and a half drive, but it was lots of fun and the weather was perfect.
We took a hayride through different scenes lit by Christmas lights. This was scene was devoted to cactus and longhorns. Only in Texas. :)

Ezra and Grandpa.

Jonas and Nana were a little too enthralled with an carol-singing "Elvis". :) At least there was a cozy fire by which we ate our dutch-oven-baked-over-a-campfire berry cobbler. Yummmm!

Another big event we participated in the weekend before we left was the Nutcracker. My cousin Laney owns a dance studio so Ezra was able to play the part of a mouse. His performance at the 2 o'clock show left something to be desired, but he nailed it at the 7 o'clock show.

Ezra and me backstage.

Our favorite mouse!

Post performance signing autographs. ;)
There's no place like home for the holidays. Unless of course, you're back in Germany with the husband you haven't seen in 6 months. (Wow--none of the kids were looking at the camera. We took this as we were leaving. They weren't too happy to be saying goodbye.)

Here's video of us on the hayride at Santa's Wonderland.
